Prepare for the Upcoming 3G Sunset

The state of technology never stays the same for long. We are introduced to new devices every day. Cell phones are a prime example of regular product upgrades that most consumers are familiar with. People routinely receive offers from their providers about upgrading to the latest version of popular smartphones.

Your alarm system, if utilizing a cellular communicator, uses some of the same cellular technology to communicate alarm signals that your cell phone uses. And because of upcoming changes from the nation’s cellular carriers, the communicator in your fire or security system needs to be updated very soon.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission or FCC recently ruled that it will no longer require wireless carriers to support 3G wireless networks beginning as early as  February 2022.

This ruling means we will need to upgrade your life safety system’s outdated 3G communicator with a brand new LTE communicator. As the FCC noted, “other devices, such as certain medical devices (and) security systems, and other connected products may be using 3G network services.”

Rest assured that this upgrade can be accomplished quickly with minimal impact on your business. It’s necessary to ensure your system will continue to function uninterrupted.

From 1G to 5G

The first generation of cell phone technology was 1G, an analog voice network. With 2G, analog connections turned digital, allowing people to send text messages.

After the introduction of 3G, it became possible to utilize the internet. Then, the 4G upgrade allowed for higher bandwidth connections. Now with the new 5G network, we will see even higher-speed data transfers, per the FCC.

This upcoming 3G phase-out for your businesses fire alarm and/or security system is part of the ongoing trend of technology product development. The FCC explains that “As mobile carriers seek to upgrade their networks to use the latest technologies, they periodically shut down older services, such as 3G, to free up spectrum and infrastructure to support new services, such as 5G.”
